Under the title Arts & Cinema & Activism, art historian Henning Engelke has chosen six films that make clear how closely Jay Leyda’s commitment to politically revolutionary cinema was linked to his dedication to a revolutionary film aesthetic. The program begins in Leyda’s first professional context in New York with Ralph Steiner’s eulogy to water, H2O (USA 1929) before drawing lines between the anti-religious satire PIE IN THE SKY (Nykino, USA 1935), abstract films like FIVE FILM EXERCISES (USA 1947) by John and James Whitney and the beginnings of the supposed apolitically post-war avantgarde (INTROSPECTION, Sara Kathryn Arledge, USA 1947). Henning Engelke gives an introduction to the program.
